Los Tigres
The story of Los Tigres Del Norte begins
in the small town of Rosa Morada, Sinaloa, Mexico. Learning
the joy of music by listening to their maternal grandfather
Ascencion Angulo sing on his ranch, the four brothers (Jorge, Raul,
Eduardo, and Hernan) started their own group while barely in their
teens playing local gigs. Due to an injury to their father,
the young men found themselves responsible for supporting their
family and music seemed to them a good way to do that. It was
1968, in Mexicali, that the brothers were hired for a Diez y Seis de
Septiembre dance in San Jose, California. Immigration
officials referred to them as "little tigers" and they now had a
name.
Finding steady work in
San Jose, the group decided to stay and sent money home to support
their family. They soon met a businessman in San Jose named
Arturo Walker who was starting a record label. From 1968
through 1980, Los Tigres recorded on his label, Discos Fama.
Los Tigres credit Walker as being one of the first people to believe
in them early in their carrer.
With the success of hits such as "Contrabando
Y Traicion", "La Banda Del Carro Rojo",
"La Juala De Oro" and "El Mojado Acaudalado", Los Tigres Del Norte
has established themselves as not only one of the most successful
norteņo bands, but the longest lasting as well.
In 1980, due to their friendship with
Guillermo Santiso, the group signed to Fonovisa Records. The
relationship has endured and led to Fonovisa assuming a dominant
position in the Mexican regional music scene, as groups naturally
gravitated to the home of Los Tigres. Los Tigres is most
renowned for their corridos, stories of the life and struggles of
Mexican immigrants, as well as politicians, outlaws, and heroes.
Los Tigres Del Norte have been the
recipient of countless awards. In addition to appearing in
more than 20 movies, the band has seven RIAA gold albums, 11 Grammy
nominations, a Grammy for best album in 1988 ("Gracias America Sin
Fronteras"), a Latin Grammy in 2000, Premio Los Nuestro's "Lifetime
Achievment Award" and they are the first Mexican group to perform
live at the American Music Awards in 1998.
Los Tigres is also the first Mexican International recording act to
perform for the US Forces in Japan (1999), Germany and Italy (2000).
Los Tigres has recorded over 50 albums, selling over 30 million
throughout their career. They continue to sell out concert
venues throughout the United States, Mexico, and Central and South
America. |
